Fluting.

Semicircular or square indents running spirally or perpendicularly on the body of a vase or other piece. Fluting is done on the engine lathe. In iJl its variations Wedgwood used fluting with mar- vellous effect. It is an essential feature of the finest basaltes vases of the Wedgwood and Bentley period — 1768-1780.
